3 Things You Should Do This Weekend
3. Friday Fest - Friday Fest sets the mood for the whole weekend. And now that The Opening Act is in the mix, you can catch some good music and music related events on Friday and Saturday nights. This week, the Deacons of Disaster rocks the stage at Third Street Park. DoD have been getting North Macon and Mellow Mushroom all riled up with their high energy cover style. Now they’ll show Downtown Macon what they’re made of. But that’s not all. Saturday night at the Opening Act, located at 567 Cherry Street, a singer/songwriter showcase featuring Louise Warren, Anna Mae Kersey, and Megan North, will highlight a few of Macon, Georgia’s young female talent. Hosted by Danny D. Glover, this event is sure to please!
2.Levee Fest - It’s not just music. It’s music and barbecue! If you like barbecue and listening to music in a picnic atmosphere, Central City Park on Saturday is the place for you. Local musician Louise Warren (performing earlier in the day before heading to the Opening Act later that night), The Fabulous Boomers, The Connor Project, Mathis Brothers, and The Midnight Riders (an Allman Brothers cover band). Also, the Luke Bryan Farm Tour, though maybe not officially part of Levee Fest, will kick off at Luther Williams Field at the conclusion of Levee Fest. All Levee Fest events are free. Luke Bryan tickets, unfortunately, are sold out.
1. Crossroads Writers Conference & Literary Festival - Crossroads Writers Group is doing the weekend up big. Not just one day, not just two days, but three days of literary events sure to please not just writers, but readers in us all. Whether you’re showing up to hear the irreverent children’s book “Go the F*** to Sleep” by Adam Mansbach, to find out how to become a better writer, or just to hear the creative/musical side projects that writers find themselves in, there is that and plenty more. To get started, Friday night is the release of the Mercer University Press book “Writing on Napkins at the Sunshine Club”, edited by Macon State professor Kevin Cantwell. It is a book of poetry that features national and international poets who have written in Macon, Georgia. The release party will be at the 567 Center for Renewal at 533 Cherry Street. Saturday from 8-6 is the Crossroads Writers Conference. If you’ve wanted to know more about writing or getting your writing to the next level, this is the event for you. 43 writers and editors help you get your writing on track. Saturday night, Macon musicians Doski Wo, Floco Torres, and DJ Roger Riddle join Idris Goodwin and Kodiak Brinks for a musicial extravaganza you won’t want to miss. Sunday is the Literary Festival. All events are free and open to the public. A writing marathon, author readings, Literoake, Storytellers, and Literary Trivia will be happening all over downtown town Macon at The Golden Bough, The Opening Act, The 567, The Rookery, Market City and the Hummingbird Stage & Taproom.
