Wild Pink Yonder

There I went, kicking and screaming, into the wild pink yonder. Just a few years ago, I was forced to face one of my biggest fears, flying without a plane or a parachute.  Without much warning and with very little caffeine, I learned that, in less than an hour, I would be riding shotgun in the Macon Cherry Blossom Balloon Race. Although they didn’t have an actual firearm, my client (an official race sponsor) did have a contract with my ad agency, and succeeded in twisting my arm. At 5am, I didn’t have many options.

At least I had another co-worker, ready to hop on board. Of course, while I was looking for any way out, Vicki was irritatingly excited about the adventure. Like a good girl scout, she had actually volunteered to ride! So, looking just as glamorous as you might imagine, we headed to Wesleyan College under the cloak of darkness, to get this thing over with. We find our captain, who turns out to be a nice guy, and he gives us the lowdown.

More than 20 teams would compete for a coveted pink prize. After a shotgun start, we would drive with our deflated balloon in back of the van until we found an appropriate place to launch. Apparently, the aeronauts (that’s what they call people who fly hot air balloons) must use their keen wind and weather-predicting skills to navigate their way back to the starting point within a specific amount of time. Then, in a very scientific manner, the captain must drop a hand towel into a spray painted circle to finish the race.

Well, we ended up in a deserted dentist’s office parking lot somewhere and began to prepare for takeoff.  Ready to watch this colorful spectacle unfold, I soon discovered that I was actually supposed to help fly this thing! I was officially a member of the crew. Bless their hearts! Even though I was terrified, I was still incredibly competitive. If I was going to die, I would die with a pink ribbon!

Hot air balloons may look as light as a feather, but that sucker was heavy! Amazingly, within just a few minutes, the loud hissing sound of a propane tank on steroids filled the air while it filled the colorful bubble with magic gas. The giant balloon with our department store name emblazoned on the banner was ready to ascend. If only I was!

Vicki and I climbed into the over-sized Easter basket and waited. As the captain boarded, the ground crew untied the ropes that safely tethered us to Sweet Mother Earth. Terrified, paralyzed and mesmerized, we began to fly. The world was eerily quiet, randomly shattered with short fiery blasts. It was awesome! I felt like Tinkerbell, with my wings and heart fluttering, as we glided undetected over historic neighborhoods and green pastures. Mind you, I was not ready to lie down in one of them. Everything looked different up there. Sparkly. Fresh. Magical. Before I was ready, the captain threw in the towel and we floated back down to reality.

On the ground, as we were told all new aeronauts do, Vicki and I knelled to thank the gods of the wind and sky for a safe journey. When we lifted our angelic faces toward heaven, we were suddenly showered with cheap champagne and presented with a new set of wings. With sticky hair, runny mascara and a huge grin, I proudly walked into the Waffle House, with my wingman, as an aeronaut.

3 Things You Should Do This Weekend

3. Friday Fest - Friday Fest sets the mood for the whole weekend. And now that The Opening Act is in the mix, you can catch some good music and music related events on Friday and Saturday nights. This week, the Deacons of Disaster rocks the stage at Third Street Park. DoD have been getting North Macon and Mellow Mushroom all riled up with their high energy cover style. Now they’ll show Downtown Macon what they’re made of. But that’s not all. Saturday night at the Opening Act, located at 567 Cherry Street, a singer/songwriter showcase featuring Louise Warren, Anna Mae Kersey, and Megan North, will highlight a few of Macon, Georgia’s young female talent. Hosted by Danny D. Glover, this event is sure to please!

2.Levee Fest - It’s not just music. It’s music and barbecue! If you like barbecue and listening to music in a picnic atmosphere, Central City Park on Saturday is the place for you. Local musician Louise Warren (performing earlier in the day before heading to the Opening Act later that night), The Fabulous Boomers, The Connor Project, Mathis Brothers, and The Midnight Riders (an Allman Brothers cover band). Also, the Luke Bryan Farm Tour, though maybe not officially part of Levee Fest, will kick off at Luther Williams Field at the conclusion of Levee Fest. All Levee Fest events are free. Luke Bryan tickets, unfortunately, are sold out.

1. Crossroads Writers Conference & Literary Festival - Crossroads Writers Group is doing the weekend up big. Not just one day, not just two days, but three days of literary events sure to please not just writers, but readers in us all. Whether you’re showing up to hear the irreverent children’s book “Go the F*** to Sleep” by Adam Mansbach, to find out how to become a better writer, or just to hear the creative/musical side projects that writers find themselves in, there is that and plenty more. To get started, Friday night is the release of the Mercer University Press book “Writing on Napkins at the Sunshine Club”, edited by Macon State professor Kevin Cantwell. It is a book of poetry that features national and international poets who have written in Macon, Georgia. The release party will be at the 567 Center for Renewal at 533 Cherry Street. Saturday from 8-6 is the Crossroads Writers Conference. If you’ve wanted to know more about writing or getting your writing to the next level, this is the event for you. 43 writers and editors help you get your writing on track. Tuesday Nights Get Busier

Gateway Macon is going to announce some really cool awards we’ve won. We’re also going to announce the 5 semifinalist for the Macon Shorts Short Film Competition. Our surprise announcement concerns Macon Music. After our announcement, we’ll have a picnic of sorts, NuWay Weiners and drinks and the opportunity to find out more about our competitions.

The Community Forum series (3rd stop at 5:30 at the Sports Hall of Fame and the last stop at 7pm at the Museum of Arts and Sciences) is a way for outsiders to gather the perspective of the community concerning the upcoming election. More than that, though, it helps the community see where others are coming from and hopefully will lead to a bigger discussion of how to get Macon on the right track, with community buy in because we chose the track. Please show up if you care about the future of Macon!

After all of that, you need a little entertainment! Strange Powers is the place to be. Strange Powers is an intimate documentary portrait of songwriter Stephin Merritt and his band the Magnetic Fields. With his unique gift for memorable melodies, lovelorn lyrics, and wry musical stylings that blend classic Tin Pan Alley with modern sounds, Stephin Merritt has distinguished himself as one of contemporary pop’s most beloved and influential artists.

And if that wasn’t enough, the music goes on just a few steps down on Cherry at the 567 Cafe. Space Ghost, Christopher Bell, Vitamin Eh, and Sick/Sea will be performing and I hear that 69 Love Songs may be played. Sounds interesting to me. Doors at 9! Only $5.

This is just Tuesday, and already, so much to do.

Grant’s Lounge - A Great Location for the Macon Shorts Short Film Competition
One of the most iconic places in downtown Macon is Grant’s Lounge. Celebrating it’s 40th year in business, it’s nondescript exterior hides a wealth of music history inside.
Macon’s Grant’s Lounge first opened its doors on February 16, 1971 at 576 Poplar Street with a seating capacity of 75. From the beginning, it was more than just another nightclub. When Mr. Edward Grant, Sr. decided to open a nightclub, he and Eddie Grant, Liz Graham and Mainland Webb wanted an atmosphere in which people from all walks of life would feel safe, comfortable and welcome.
Its existence made a loud statement about people and the oneness of human beings. And it was from this modest establishment that much of what the world now knows as southern rock was conceived.
Between 1971 and about 1976, guests at Grant’s would be exposed to over 100 rock and jazz bands. Most of these bands were looking for that “lucky break.” Grant’s performers like the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Wet Willie and Charlie Daniels were among the lucky ones and are honored on Grant’s “Wall of Fame” located in the legendary lounge.
